Model routing: explicit selection versus automatic decisions
Learn what model-name routing means and what to verify before relying on automatic model selection or fallback.
The short answer
Routing a request to a named model is different from choosing the cheapest or best model for a task. TokenBison's documented client workflow uses an explicit model ID. Do not assume semantic model selection, automatic cross-model fallback or a service-level guarantee unless that behavior is separately documented and verified.
Specify the decision owner
Decide whether your application chooses the model or a documented platform policy does. For an application-controlled workflow, map task types to model IDs in configuration: for example, evaluate one candidate for short drafts and another for longer analysis. This is a proposed application design, not a claim that TokenBison automatically classifies prompts or applies such a policy.
Separate retry from fallback
Retrying the same request can produce another attempt with the same model; fallback can change the model or provider. Neither action is automatically safe for a workflow with side effects. Record a request identifier in your application and keep downstream writes idempotent. Set an attempt limit, and surface failure when the limit is reached rather than creating an unbounded retry loop.
Test failure paths before depending on them
In a controlled development environment, test an invalid model ID, an unavailable credential and a request your application can safely abandon. Record whether your client retries and what users see. If a proposed routing policy switches models, re-run the quality and formatting checks on every candidate. A different model returning a response is not proof that the task was completed correctly.

TokenBison API documentation · reviewed 2026-09-16
The documentation implementation specifies https://tokenbison.com/v1, server-side API keys and an explicit model identifier. Optional capabilities must be verified per model; the shared interface does not establish universal feature support.
Google Cloud: model routing overview · reviewed 2026-09-16
Google describes dispatch using the model name in a request. Model-name routing and quality-based model selection are different concepts. This reference is not evidence of a TokenBison availability guarantee.

Review current model prices, then make a small API request with public or non-sensitive sample data. Compare the output against your own acceptance criteria.
